Just a short drive from Jiuzhaigou lies another geological masterpiece that looks as though it was lifted straight from a myth. Huanglong, which literally translates to "Yellow Dragon," is a breathtaking 3.6-kilometer-long alpine valley famed for its massive, naturally occurring travertine terraces. Viewed from above, the cascading, golden-hued mineral deposits wind their way down through the dense primeval forest, perfectly resembling a giant golden dragon resting in the snow-capped mountains of Sichuan.
The defining feature of Huanglong is its incredible network of over 3,000 distinct, tiered pools. These delicate limestone basins have been built up over millennia as mineral-rich hot springs bubbled up through the earth and cascaded down the slopes. The waters trapped in these shallow pools reflect the sky and the surrounding foliage, glowing in vivid shades of milky blue, mint green, and bright gold. The Five-Color Pond, located at the very top of the valley near an ancient Buddhist temple, is the spectacular crowning jewel of this natural architecture.
Exploring Huanglong is an intense physical and visual adventure. The valley floor sits at a staggering altitude of over 3,000 meters (about 10,000 feet), surrounded by even higher snow peaks. While a cable car is available to assist visitors, taking the wooden boardwalks down past the roaring waterfalls and limestone shoals allows for an intimate look at rare alpine flora, and occasionally, glimpses of the elusive Sichuan golden snub-nosed monkey. It is an unforgettable journey that perfectly blends high-altitude trekking with surreal geological beauty.
